Along with Thanksgiving, July 4th is a holiday Americans can claim all to themselves. There's no shortage of fun, family oriented things to do in Massachusetts from July 2-5. Boston Harborfest is the king of all things 4th of July. With hundreds of events for adults and children, including historic enactments, live music, food, and patriotic revelries, and of course fireworks, you won't run out of things to do. But Independence Day celebrations aren't limited to Boston. There is a solemn reading of the Declaration of Independence at Old Sturbridge Village; a Blessing of the Fleet with food and live music in New Bedford; art shows in Brewster ; a road race on Nantucket; and much more. Don't miss any opportunity to get out there and have some patriotic fun. Here are just some of the things to do in Massachusetts this 4th of July.

GREATER BOSTON

Boston Harborfest

Festival includes more than 220 events: walking tours, concerts, Revolutionary-era historical reenactments, the famous Chowdafest, visits from U.S. and foreign naval ships; harbor cruises; State House tours; guided walking tours of the North End, Boston’s underground and the Harbor Islands; treasure hunt; tour of Coast Guard ships; whale watch and dinner cruises; chowder fest; USS Constitution Turnaround Cruise; Boston Pops concert and fireworks.

Boston Navy Week
June 30-July 5
This is the sixth year in a row that Boston has been chosen to host a Navy Week celebration, which recognizes the Sailors who serve our country and the communities that support them. Through a series of events ranging from ship visits to Navy band musical performances and meet and greet events with local Sailors, the U.S. Navy will come together with the members of the greater Boston community to honor the history of the Navy and cultivate new connections between the city and the world’s greatest maritime fighting force. It will run in conjunction with the 29th annual Boston Harborfest.

Salem Celebrates the Fourth

Join the City of Salem at the Salem Maritime National Historic Site for the 9th Annual Pops! Concert featuring the Hillyer Festival Orchestra and Fireworks. Festivities begin at 4:00 PM with the opening of the Kids' Space featuring DJ Doug Parker, dancing, games, contests and prizes, face painting, arts & crafts. Sandra Lee will perform on the main stage at 5:00 PM. Mayor Kimberley Driscoll will lead the opening ceremonies at 7:15 PM, which will feature Salem Veteran Color Guard Units and Salem Boy Scout troops. A United States Air Force flyover is planned for the event, as well.

Danvers Family Festival

Festivities leading up to the Danvers Fireworks on July 3 start about a month prior with themed nights, concerts, games and festivals. The Fireworks Festival itself takes place at Plains Park from 4 - 9 pm. The main stage hosts musical performances while various concession stands sell delicious food. The Just for Fun areas features games and rides for kids. Throughout the early evening there is a stunt plane show, along with parachuting and a military fly over. The famed fireworks show begins at 9:30 pm.

The featured events are the always unique morning Horribles Parade and a spectacular evening shoreline illumination and aerial fireworks display held at West Beach. Rounding out the holiday events, the Committee also sponsors the House Decorating Contest, the Family & Friends Cookout, the youngsters Scavenger Hunt, the post Parade "Old Timers" adult softball game at Dix Park, races and games at West Beach on the afternoon of the 4th, and musical entertainment at the Beach leading up to the fireworks.

Come join with your friends and neighbors for a fun-filled celebration. Children’s Parade 8:30 am bike and baby carriage parade beginning at the VFW parking lot on Bradford Street and ending on the Town Common. Decorated bids will be judged and prizes award for various categories. Games and Races 9 am on the Town Common for all ages – relay races, sack races, wheel barrel races, three-legged races. Every child will leave home with something, whether it’s a medal for participation or a gold, silver or half-dollar for first, second or third prize. Live band on the Town Common Gazebo from 9 am to 12 pm. Please bring a picnic lunch and blankets or chairs to sit on while listening to the tunes of The Dick Kaplan Band. Hot dogs, chips, water, coffee and Richie’s Italian Ice will be available at no cost while supplies last.

The Legion Bud Band starts at 7pm and ends just before the fireworks begin, with the playing of the 1812 Overture.

The parade will commence at 9:30 a.m. at the County Complex on Railroad Avenue; proceed down Main Street (Route 6A); left onto Mill Way and continue to the Village Hollow where it will end for various activities.

Cotuit
Starting at 11:00 a.m.
The parade will begin at the Cotuit Post Office, proceed down School Street to Main Street; left on Main Street to the rear entrance of the Cotuit Elementary School, where it will end.

Hyannisport
Starting at 11:00 a.m.
The parade will begin at the Hyannisport Post Office on Longwood Avenue; left onto Washington Avenue; right onto Lafayette Avenue; left onto Winchester Avenue; left onto Scudder Avenue; and continue onto Dale Avenue to the West Beach Club, where it will end. A Road Race starting at 9:00 a.m. at Hyannisport Post Office precedes the parade.

Osterville
Starting at 11:00 a.m.
The parade route will begin on Webster Street in Osterville; turn right onto Sea View Avenue; turn right onto Warren Street, where the parade will end.

Hyannis
Starting at 4 p.m.
Hyannis Main Street – This year’s parade features bands and lots of music, including the Barnstable High School Band, Dennis-Yarmouth High School Band. The Greater Hyannis Civic Association is sponsoring a children’s bicycle decorating contest on the Village Green prior to the kick-off of the parade. The children will join the parade at that part of Main Street and ride to South Street.

Edgartown

The Town of Edgartown's 4th of July parade is a long-standing tradition filled with fun for the entire family. As the parade winds through downtown and around each corner, you will see kilt-clad bagpipers, veterans, floats promoting the island's many non-profit organizations, firetrucks, animals and a whole lot of candy and excitement. The fireworks are scheduled for Sunday, July 4 at dusk at Falmouth Heights Beach (approximately 8:45p.m.) Spectators are asked to bring a radio and to set it to 92.7,WMVY, in order to hear the music that accompanies the show. The traffic and access on the Falmouth Heights area roads will begin to be "restricted" at 6:00 p.m. and will be so until the area has been cleared after the fireworks. Rain date is Monday, July 5.

Our free, ever-popular reading of the Declaration of Independence features some of the most stirring words of political rhetoric ever written, spoken out loud by Company actors and special guests from the community. It is preceded this year by Revolutionary Moments, a special collection of vignettes compiled by Tina Packer and featuring S&Co. actors. Revolutionary Moments highlights the influence of Shakespeare on some of history's most fascinating figures. Not to be missed! Spend the day in the sun, enjoy our delicious Fourth of July Community Barbecue, and celebrate our nation's independence.
